About this major
Mechanical Engineering examines forces, motion, energy, materials, and thermal systems. Students use calculus, physics, computer-aided design, laboratories, and team projects to analyze physical products and processes. Clemson’s program spans design, manufacturing, transportation, energy, and other applications, giving students several directions for advanced coursework. The sequence also builds a broad engineering foundation.

Before You Choose
What studying it feels like
You’ll use math to predict how physical systems move and use energy. Labs and prototypes expose where the model falls short, so redesign is part of the learning rather than a mistake.
One thing to know
Mechanical engineering is deliberately broad. Technical electives and project experience are what begin turning that breadth into a recognizable direction.
Ask yourself
- 1Do you enjoy testing a physical idea until it works?
- 2Which projects will help turn a broad degree into your direction?
Longer-term context
$120,000
National median for U.S. graduates ages 35–45 · 2024
